Why Honey is Good For Wound Care

Honey has been used as a natural way of treating wounds for thousands of years. In Egypt, there are records of using honey for healing dating back to 2400 BCE! Honey was and is used orally to help coughs or sore throats and topically to help wounds heal. Today, there are proven clinical studies on the antimicrobial activity of honey. When our co-founders Sean and Ramy were in school, they used this knowledge of honey to create a way to help treat wounds!

HoneyCure was originally created as a three-part system to help burn victims. Sean and Ramy wanted to use honey because of its natural healing properties. Bacteria like to live in a moist environment, and there is very little water in honey. So, between the low amount of water and high sugar content, it makes an inhospitable environment for bacteria to live and grow. Another benefit of honey is its anti-inflammatory properties. Honey can help remove the bacteria that causes inflammation. By reducing inflammation, it helps reduce pain.

In HoneyCure, we use a special type of honey called UMF 15+ Manuka Honey. This is the only honey to be FDA-approved as being medical grade. There are wounds that need antibiotics, but for some minor wounds, honey may be able to help better support the healing process!

In UMF 15+ Manuka honey, there is a natural presence of methylglyoxal (MGO) and hydrogen peroxide that work to dehydrate the bacteria in the wound. The MGO works to only dehydrate the bacteria, not the wound itself, making an optimal environment for wound healing! Manuka honey also works with the specific blend of essential oils within HoneyCure to soothe the wound and create an anti-inflammatory effect.

Like all honey, the high concentrations of sugar and other soluble materials naturally absorb fluid from the wound. What makes Manuka honey unique is that it does this without losing any of its benefits in the process. The Manuka honey helps the wound drain, and the ointment helps to keep it hydrated to minimize scar tissue formation.

When creating HoneyCure, we wanted to use the best ingredients! Honey is a great and natural way to help encourage your pet’s wounds to heal. You can find HoneyCure on our online store or at a local pet store near you! Want to know more about how HoneyCure works? Learn more here!
